Michael Habib e a Biblioteca Universitária 2.0 /and Academic Library 2.0

It has came to my attention that Michael Hibib was interested in a translation of my post about his master thesis. I believe the best translations are those done by the authors themselves, so were it goes:

It has crossed my mind, many times, how much the energy and inventiveness of young librarians in response to the torrent of challenges Internet places in our collective path, makes me remember the words of Winston Churchill during WWII when everything seemed bleak: “this was their finest hour

In a paper I recently presented (Where is the grade [Both teachers seem to follow this blog] I noted how extraordinary it was that the ink on the Web 2.0  concept was not even dry [half a billion refreshs in the memory chip’s] when someone advanced the rise of the Library 2.0 concept

Não só isso, mas mal tinha passado um ano sobre a génese da ideia Biblioteca 2.0, quando na School of Information and Library Science da University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill foi defendida uma tese de mestrado intitulada: Toward Academic Library 2.0: Development and Application of a Library 2.0 Methodology.

Again, barely one year has passed since the genesis of the Library 2.0 idea and already a masters thesis was defended at the School of Information and Library Science of the  University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with the title: Toward Academic Library 2.0: Development and Application of a Library 2.0 Methodology.

Do resumo:

From the Abstract:

Recently, librarians have struggled to understand their relationship to a new breed of Web services that, like libraries, connect users with the information they need. These services, known as Web 2.0, offer new service models, methods, and technologies that can be adapted to improve library services. Additionally, these services affect library users’ information seeking behaviors, communication styles, and expectations. The term Library 2.0 has been introduced into the professional language of librarianship as a way to discuss these changes. This paper works to establish a theoretical foundation of Library 2.0 in academic libraries, or Academic Library 2.0.

The author’s name is Michael Habib, and the degree sought is Master of Science in Library Science.

Pelas reações (ALA TechSource | The Academic Library 2.0 Model: An ALA TS Blog Interview with Michael C. Habib, blyberg.net » Stephens on Habib: A quiet revolutionary, Tame The Web: Libraries and Technology: Michael Habib on Academic Library 2.0 entre outras) que tenho visto na biblioblogosfera  não hesito em partilhar das opiniões de muitos que este trabalho é seminal na biblioteconomia do século XXI (e o Dr. Habib ainda é bem jovem).

By the reactions (ALA TechSource | The Academic Library 2.0 Model: An ALA TS Blog Interview with Michael C. Habib, blyberg.net » Stephens on Habib: A quiet revolutionary, Tame The Web: Libraries and Technology: Michael Habib on Academic Library 2.0 among others) I’ve seen in the biblio-glog’osphere I have no doubts in sharing the opinion of many that this might be a seminal work on librarianship for the 21st century (and Dr Habib is still quite young).

I might even have had a better grade [in my own paper] if I had found this paer earlier, and quoted his own definition of Library 2.0, very simple and concise:

Library 2.0 describes a subset of library services designed to meet user needs caused by the direct and peripheral effects of Web 2.0.

Which corresponds, almost 100%, with my own perspective of Library 2.0, that I advanced in my paper [See the slide show part of the paper on o bibliotecário 2.0 (β): Programa de Formação WEB 2.0 [Slide 10 has my own wording of the defenition]].
